Disney’s film empire has reinvented its theatrical release schedule in a major way.
The studio announced a series of changes on Tuesday, led by the news that it’s setting up two Star Wars movies for 2026 and pushback Avatars 3 of one year, from December 2024 to December 2025. In addition, Avatars 4 will now hit theaters in December 2029, followed by Avatars 5 in December 2031 – meaning 4 AND 5 will now open three years later than previously announced.
Other highlights: Ryan Reynolds fans will be happy to know he’s untitled Deadpool 3 it will now be released in theaters on May 3, 2024, instead of November 8, 2024.
Still on the Marvel Studios front, Avengers: Kang Dynasty it was moved up one year to May 1, 2026. The film battled Jonathan Majors in the lead role. The actor is accused of assault by the New York court. The continuation, Avengers: Secret Warsit was also moved up one year, to May 7, 2027.
Disney has already announced the live-action Vaiana received a theatrical release date of June 27, 2025.
20th Century added another installment in Alien franchise, dated for August 16, 2024. Director Fede Alvarez is behind the film, starring Cailee Spaeny. The studio also added Rami Malek’s thriller The amateur to Nov. 8, 2024.
Lucasfilm didn’t have a Star Wars in theaters from 2019 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. At April’s Star Wars celebration, she teased her theatrical future, including a feature film starring Daisy Ridley, another of The Mandalorian’it’s Dave Filoni and a James Mangold epic. On Tuesday, Lucasfilm moved a previously dated Star Wars film from December 2025 to May 22, 2026. Ridley’s feature is the most advanced in development and is likely to open on that date. And curiously, Lucasfilm revealed in Tuesday’s announcement that they’ve added a new one Star Wars function for only five months after: December 18, 2026. (Another Star Wars the film remains in its current date of December 17, 2027, so it was not mentioned in the announcement).
Marvel Studios has made a few other small changes to its schedule. Captain America: Brave New World it jumped back about three months to July 26, 2024. Lightning pushed five months to December 20, 2024. Lama likewise moved five months to February 14, 2025, while Fantastic Four jumped back three months to May 2, 2025. Several Marvel movies, including Lama AND Lightningdecided to delay going into production during the writers’ strike.
