All over the world, Hollywood tentacles are closing down. Wonder Deadpool 3by Ridley Scott Gladiator sequel and the eighth of Tom Cruise Mission Impossible the film is among the projects on hold as the actors’ strike begins.
The SAG-AFTRA outage comes two months after a writers’ strike hampered the TV business and delayed several films. Now the film business also comes to a halt, though the studios are trying to get the ball rolling with what they’ve already shot as they make plans to resume production down the road.
At Marvel Studios, which has more movies and TV shows in post-production, this is an ethic studio head Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito shared in an email to staff on Thursday.

“We recognize how much you have all done for your specific projects and it is disappointing when carefully laid out plans need to change, but constant change is the nature of the manufacturing business and our teams are no strangers to unexpected challenges and evolving to meet them” Feige and D’Esposito wrote.”We deeply appreciate all of your efforts to make the best of the situation and can all hope that a new deal will be finalized soon so we can resume the great work we have underway.”
The studios had long known that a strike was a possibility, and some films had contingency plans in place in the event of a strike. A production source notes that scenes in their film were pre-loaded with a key player they knew would not be available in the fall due to a series commitment following the end of a potential strike.
One area where work can potentially continue is animation, particularly for projects launching in 2025 and beyond. As is common practice, animators might have people in their studio record temporary vocals about upcoming projects to help inform the work, with SAG-AFTRA actors recording their lines later. Animated films aiming for a 2024 release, however, may be more likely to be at a point in production where actors would be needed to record final dialogue. Movies scheduled for release in 2024 include Kung fu pandas 4 (8th of March), Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on June 3 (although that was already likely to change, even before the strike), despicable me 4 (July 3) and Transformers One (September 13).
Here are the features The Hollywood Reporter confirmed they are stopping filming. Others who filmed, for example Cockroach juice 2, by Clint Eastwood Juror #2 and Mortal combat supposedly they are stopping, but DAY has not independently confirmed that this is the case.
