Emma Stone reveals more of her Frankenstein in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Poor Things’ trailer

Emma Stone comes back to life and finally finds freedom and purpose as a female Frankenstein in the latest trailer of Yorgos Lanthimos Poor things monster tale, which Searchlight Pictures released Thursday.

The surreal teaser stars Stone as Bella Baxter, who is brought back to life by a brilliant and unorthodox scientist played by Willem Dafoe. In an echo of Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel FrankensteinBaxter is wired for shock treatment as electric sparks fly.

Once reborn, the character of Stone embarks on a whirlwind adventure to free himself from the prejudices of his time. “There is a world to enjoy, to circumnavigate. Everyone’s goal is to progress and grow,” Baxter announces at one point in the trailer as she charts her path to liberation and freedom.

The short teaser trailer touches on Bella’s whirlwind relationship with Duncan Wedderburn, played by Mark Ruffalo, a shrewd and debauched lawyer in the Greek director’s latest film. Poor things Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott also star.

The Favourite writer Tony McNamara wrote the screenplay, based on Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name. Lanthimos also has film credits such as The killing of a sacred deer AND Dog’s tooth.

Element Pictures and Film4 by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe, the production team behind it The Favouritewill produce alongside Stone, via its Fruit Tree banner, and Lanthimos.

Poor things will only be released in theaters on September 8, 2023.
