Ewan McGregor showed his kids ‘Trainspotting’ bathroom scene ‘Just for a Laugh’

Many great actors have filmed provocative scenes they’d rather their families not watch, but Ewan McGregor was thrilled to show his kids the grossest scene of his career.

Addressing the press at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival (via Variety), the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” star opened up about the joy of introducing his filmography to his children. She took particular pleasure in showing her daughter the infamous scene from ‘Trainspotting’ in which she dives into the aptly nicknamed ‘Scotland’s worst toilet’ to recover some heroin.

“I wasn’t there when (my daughter) Clara saw ‘Trainspotting’ for the first time,” said McGregor. “But I used to show my kids the toilet scene. Just for Laugh. It’s a unique situation, perhaps, for a father to be able to show his children footage of him going down the toilet.

“Trainspotting” wasn’t the only film in McGregor’s filmography that he used to traumatize his children. The actor also showed “Moulin Rouge!” His daughter Baz Luhrmann. her at a young age, recalling that she enjoyed the film despite some of the suggestive content.

“I have a memory of showing Clara ‘Moulin Rouge!’, by the way,” she said. “I think she was nine years old. I put it on, and then I hear this moan and cry. I rushed in, asking if I should turn it off and she was like ‘Nooo!’”

The shock value that the “Trainspotting” scene still delivers in 2023 is a testament to the film’s enduring quality. Danny Boyle’s cult classic, which spawned a well-received following in 2017, is still regarded as one of the funniest addiction movies ever made. Boyle said he attributes it to his decision to portray the effects of heroin use as something markedly different from what people experience in real life.

“I think if you’re being honest, the first movie looked more like MDMA drug abuse than actual heroin abuse,” Boyle said in a 2017 interview with IndieWire. “The adrenaline rush of the film was much greater, while heroin abuse is obviously a very boring subject to consider – not much happens. People hang around in a corner, really, or get quite soporific.
