Margot Robbie Says ‘Clueless’ Wardrobe Helped Inspire Fashion in ‘Barbie’

One of the most important things to Barbie is her fashion, and director Greta Gerwig has made sure that that is conveyed in her next film.

Architectural digest recently gone behind the scenes of Barbie set to to discover how the world was brought to life, and one of the highlighted features was the infamous fashion doll wardrobe.

Gerwig told the magazine she remembered as a kid “standing in Toys ‘R’ Us, looking at Barbies with the plastic sheet (on top of the box) and everything, and you wanted to take it off and take everything apart and touch everything.”

That plastic cover inspired the design behind Barbie’s closet in the film, which featured glass doors that open to a “magical wardrobe” with items perfectly placed along the wall.

Robbie said they were all “very excited” by the design of the wardrobe and the clothes inside. He added: “We were saying that the wardrobe in In the darkfor example, the standard was so high and we would really like to do something so beautiful.

The actress also teased what audiences can expect to see when Barbie changes her outfit in the film. “Every day, her dress is magically here in her wardrobe,” Robbie explained. “She opens the doors, all she has to do is look at it, it goes around, and then it’s on her body and it’s gone, and her dress for the next day is sitting in the closet behind her.”

The film’s production designer, Sarah Greenwood, recently opened up A.D about how they put together the iconic pink scenography and said that because of the construction, there was an international shortage of the fluorescent shade of Rosco paint. He added, “The world … has run out of pink.”

Barbie will be released in theaters on July 21.
