Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Dropped Out of Netflix Top 10 by J.Lo’s ‘The Mother’

“The Mother,” directed by director Niki Caro and screenwriter Misha Green, stars Lopez in the title role, a US military agent who comes out of hiding to protect his abandoned daughter from assassins. Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Paez, Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci and Gael García Bernal also star in the film, which received mixed reviews when it premiered on Netflix this spring.

Those mixed reviews are in line with the films it shares the Top 10 with, which tend to consist of stellar action films or thrillers met with critical shrugs despite their popularity on the streamer, such as ‘Red Notice,’ ‘Bird Box”, “The Gray Man”, “The Adam Project”, “Extraction” and “The Unforgivable”. Adam McKay’s comedy “Don’t Look Up” managed to score an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and second place in the Top 10 based on its brilliant case despite similar lukewarm reviews.

While the Top 10 still has one tidbit in “Glass Onion,” the acclaimed sequel to Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out,” “The Irishman” was still the most critically acclaimed film on the list before it was officially axed; the gangster epic was nominated for 10 Oscars in 2020. Before dropping off the list, it was also one of only two Top 10 films to be released before the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a huge increase in the number of Netflix subscribers; the only film left from the pre-pandemic days is ‘Bird Box’, which went viral when it released in 2018. Luckily for Scorsese, it still has a chance to surpass another streamer’s viewing metrics by the end of the pandemic. year, when Apple TV+ will debut its highly anticipated and long-running “Killers of the Flower Moon”.

In addition to announcing “The Mother” top 10 ascension, Netflix released its weekly lists of the most popular movies and TV shows on the streamer. J.LO tops the list of British films, with ‘The Mother’ clocking in at 16.48 million hours viewed worldwide.
