Mel Gibson, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and others: ‘Czech’ out of the trailers of the big stars of the Karlovy Vary festival

What do Mel Gibson, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Casey Affleck, Jude Law, Harvey Keitel, Andy Garcia and Danny DeVito have in common other than stardom? All received accolades from the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic and starred in its popular festival trailers. Johnny Depp is the latest big name in Hollywood to join the list.
During the opening ceremony of the big summer festival in the picturesque Czech spa town on Friday night, the organizers will unveil the trailer for its 57th edition, starring Depp.

“Two years ago, Johnny Depp received an immensely warm reception from the public and fans, thanks to which he became a great supporter of ours,” said Karlovy Vary Film Festival Executive Director Kryštof Mucha before the trailer presentation . “And so he agreed to shoot a trailer even though we were limited by his busy schedule. The trailer did great and I am convinced that Johnny Depp will one day return to Vary in person.”
The Karlovy Vary team presented star-studded trailers, exploring what artists who received a Lifetime Crystal Globe honor from the festival actually do with their statue, for 15 years. They are typically black and white and full of attitude.
2010 winner Jude Law, for example, puts his creative use award in a car-focused festival trailer running 1 minute 35 seconds for the 46th edition of the event. In the meantime, Malkovich’s trailer features an awkward “oh” moment in a cab, Affleck’s journey to pawn shop ends with a surprise, while Mirren wants keep his statue in its box, which keeps appearing mysteriously next to an Oscar statuette. Late legendary director Milos Forman has found a healthy use for its trophy, while another trailer from the past shows it DeVito’s sleep disturbed by a phone call. And the trailer with Gibson features the star interrupting a break-in.
