Mike White wants to make a “White Lotus” All-Star season.

When “The White Lotus” returned to HBO in 2022, Mike White proved that the acclaimed season 1 was anything but a fluke. Reprising the magic of Season 1 with an (almost) all-new ensemble cast, the showrunner proved that “The White Lotus” has endless potential as a globetrotting anthology series. But even though he’s more than capable of reinventing his premise every year, White isn’t sure he’s seen the last of a few fan-favorite characters.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, White opened up about his long-term plans for the series. She teased that fans can expect to see more characters from previous seasons return sporadically to the show. And along the way, he’s open to making a star season with a cast of returning characters.

“It would be easy to just be a full anthology, but I think it’s more fun to have little threads throughout the show,” she said. “If the show goes on for a couple of seasons, it would be fun to have a star season.”

White explained that he is open to experimenting with the “White Lotus” formula in a variety of ways. While the first two seasons opened with a mysterious corpse before slowly building to reveal the identity of the dead character, he said he doesn’t think every subsequent season should revolve around a death.

“I don’t think it always has to be a body,” she says. “There are so many ways we want to reinvent the show every year. For example, what is this show – other than people? A new mystery, perhaps people are expecting it. But I don’t feel bound by expectations. It is funny.”

For now, White plans to expand the show’s mythology by bringing Season 3 to Asia. While writing and pre-production have been halted due to the WGA strike, the showrunner has already spoken about the Thailand locations and how the Eastern setting could alter the story.

“Season 1 is all about money, and then season 2 is about sex,” she said. “I think Season 3 would perhaps be a satirical and humorous look at Eastern death and religion and spirituality. It looks like it could be a rich tapestry to take another round at the White Lotus.
