‘Past Lives’ Breakout Greta Lee Gets Leading Role in ‘Tron 3’ (Exclusive)

Greta Lee, who is generating a lot of hype for her role in the acclaimed romantic drama Past liveslogged in Tron: Aresthe latest installment in Disney’s cybertech adventure film series.

In what is being described as a starring role, Lee now joins Jared Leto and Evan Peters in the film, which is gearing up for an August shoot in Vancouver. Joachim Ronning, at the helm Maleficent: mistress of evil and co-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Talesis in the director’s chair.

Disney released the original Tron in 1982, with Jeff Bridges as video game designer Kevin Flynn, who is transported inside his own creation and collaborates with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. A 2010 sequel took a generational approach to the story, bringing back Bridges by adding Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.

While those films weren’t exactly box office hits, the unique aesthetics, worlds, and popularity of the Disneyworld ride give the studio hope that a third time around is the allure to turn the property into a bona fide film franchise.

While the previous two films were largely set in the world of computers and programs, the screenplay of Areswritten by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, it is said to focus on the emergence of a sentient program that traverses the human world that is not ready for contact.

Leto is Ares, the show’s manifestation, with Lee playing a video game programmer and CEO of a tech company who must flee to protect her world-changing technology.

Justin Springer and Jeffrey Silver are producing as are Emma Ludbrook and Leto, the latter through their Paradox production company. Russell Allen is running the production.

Born to Korean immigrant parents, Lee has been acting for more than a dozen years, but it’s only recently that her star has soared at comet speed. The actress had lead roles in the acclaimed Netflix comedy Russian doll as well as Apple TV The morning show. And he voices a key character in the current blockbuster, Spider-Man: Across the Universe.

Past lives sees her romantically torn between the present and the past in the outing of A24 which has become one of the best-reviewed films of the year and is generating awards hype for the Los Angeles native.

Lee, who has also worked on Broadway, is represented by UTA, Range Media and Jackoway Tyerman.
