‘Reservation Dogs’ will end with the third season
One of the best shows on TV is coming to an end soon. “Reservation Dogs,” the acclaimed FX series on Hulu about four teenagers living on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma, will conclude with its upcoming third season.
Series creator Sterlin Harjo made the announcement Thursday, via a post on his Instagram. In the post, Harjo stressed that the decision to end the series was his own, and it was the right move creatively.
“Ah, young and old warriors!” Harjo he wrote. “There you go: the upcoming third season of ‘Reservation Dogs’ will be the last season. That’s a tough sentence to write and an even harder decision to make. Still, it’s the creatively correct decision for the show. I always knew what the end of this story would be, I just didn’t know when it would come. As we continued to break stories and write scripts this season, it became clear to the producers, Taika, and myself that the Season 3 finale is the perfect series finale.
Harjo went on to thank FX and Hulu for their support in making the series, as well as the show’s cast and crew, and hinted that he might want to revisit the characters again in future stories once “Reservation Dogs” wraps up. . She also spoke about the cultural significance of the show, which features an entirely Indigenous American writing-directing team.
“When we came up with the idea for ‘Reservation Dogs,’ I didn’t think the show would ever happen, but luckily it did,” wrote Harjo. “Almost all television and film portrayals about natives are mostly inaccurate. And most of them have been fake. It has been a gift to show the world a different perspective of indigenous people and our culture. Above all, it has been a dream to collaborate and make a show entirely written, directed and performed by native people.
Created by Harjo with Taika Waititi, ‘Reservation Dogs’ stars Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor and Paulina Alexis as the ‘Rez Dogs’, a group of four teenagers on their native reservation in Oklahoma than committing petty crimes and schemes in an attempt to raise money to move to California. The series follows the four teenagers through their daily lives, as they struggle to overcome the suicide of their former member Daniel (Dalton Cramer). The series also features Sarah Podemski, Zahn McClarnon, Dallas Goldtooth and Gary Farmer in recurring roles.
‘Reservation Dogs’ Season 1 premiered in 2021, with Season 2 arriving the following year. Both seasons received critical acclaim, with praise for the writing, directing, and performances by the cast, especially Jacobs. The show received a Peabody Award, as well as two Independent Spirit Award nominations.
“People spout historic and groundbreaking words too often and without merit. ‘Reservation Dogs’ is worthy of those superlatives,” FX said in a statement. “Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi created one of the most important TV shows ever made. They have given the world a wholly unique, original and honest portrait of the natives, a portrait never before seen in television or cinema.
The third and final season of “Reservation Dogs” will debut on August 2, with its first two episodes. The rest of the season will premiere every Wednesday.
