Shanghai: Uzbekistan’s ‘Sunday’ wins first prize for Asian new talent

Uzbek family drama Sundaydirected by Shokir Kholikov, was named Best Film in the Asian New Talent section of the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, which honors distinguished works by emerging regional directors.

Sunday tells the story of an elderly couple who live a quiet life in a remote village, with their elder son residing nearby and their younger son working abroad. It depicts the conflicting dreams and dramas between two generations.

The Asian New Talents Jury awarded the Best Director Award to two directors: Aisultan Seit of Kazakhstan for Qash; and Chinese Luo Dong won by May.

The Best Actor award went to 10-year-old actor Yue Hao, who plays the lead role in the Chinese film Daydreaming. The best actress was awarded to Sorour Peyrovani, the protagonist of the Iranian film 1.5 horsepower.

“Every film in (in the lineup) is very insightful with mature technology. Furthermore, the subject is contemporary, to express the profound thought of society and humanity,” said Aktan Arym Kubat, president of the jury of the Asian New Talent section. “I have encountered many difficulties but I remain obsessed with shooting excellent works. So, I really hope that young and talented filmmakers like you can continue to create and contribute to the film industry. “

In their official joint statement, the Asian New Talent judging panel said, “The new directors’ works are quite mature and the themes are also innovative. They don’t look like novices anymore.

The Shanghai main competition jury, chaired by legendary Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski, will award the festival’s Golden Goblet Awards on Sunday.
