Xolo Maridueña is discovering a whole new skill set in the new trailer of Blue Beetlewhich shows his character, Jaime Reyes, dealing with the alien armor he must learn to control.
Blue Beetle is based on the DC Comics character and comes from Charm City Kings director Angelo Manuel Soto. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wrote the screenplay.
Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is especially notable as he will be the first character to be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC Universe. Gunn and Safran are planning a whole new slate after taking over as co-heads of DC Studios in November, with their first film expected to be Superman: Legacy (to be released in July 2025). Although Blue Beetle was made as part of the previous regime’s plans, Gunn said this version of the character will continue.

“We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have created for future installments of the DCU,” Soto confirmed last month.
Blue Beetle was originally slated as an HBO Max release, when DC was planning movies for the now-defunct streaming service. It has been updated to theaters and is dated for August 18th. The film comes as DC has suffered a series of mistakes, most recently with The flashand Warners is hoping for better results for Cockroach as well as that of December Aquaman and the lost kingdomthe last DC movie made in the pre-Gunn/Safran era.
“The family aspect of this movie and the character is inherent in the comics and so special,” said Maridueña The Hollywood Reporter last year. “The family that we were able to create in the film – the mom, the dad, the uncle, the sister, the grandmother – I feel like that aspect of being a superhero hasn’t been exploited very much.”
