With ‘The Flash’ starring on VOD, Warner Bros. Discovery gets another No. 1 movie
With a troubled history and weak box office, DC Comics’ “The Flash” ($19.99) on PVOD gives Warner Bros. its second #1 film right now. While “Barbie” is off a $162 million theatrical domestic opening, “The Flash” takes the top spot on all three VOD charts this week, just over a month after debuting in theaters. Never mind that “Barbie” made more in its opening weekend than “The Flash” in its sub-$110 million domestic run, in a film twice the cost to produce.
In an even faster turnaround, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” ($19.99), consistent with Universal’s home release strategy after three weekends in theaters, also made it onto all three lists after the animated film grossed $15 million. Vudu, with a revenue-based chart favoring more expensive stocks, is the best in third place.
At some undetermined point, those studios will have huge post-theater theatrical potential. Based on its deal with Christopher Nolan on “Oppenheimer,” Universal won’t execute its standard PVOD deal after five weekends. WB doesn’t have an established pattern but usually the bigger the movie, the later the release.
The three platforms’ top 10 lists are nearly identical, with only 11 titles between them. These included “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, “Asteroid City”, “Fast X”, all for $19.99, and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “John Wick: Chapter 4” for $5.99. Universal (with Focus included) is back to screening outsized, with 13 of the 30 slots occupied by their films.
“They Cloned Tyrone” has led six Netflix Originals into the top 10. It stars John Boyega and Jamie Foxx in a comedy about a government conspiracy to experiment on black people. Three other new originals on the charts include two documentaries (“The Deepest Breath,” “Unknown: Cave of Bones”) and a Mexican comedy (“The Almost Legends”). The highest rated studio film is last week’s No. 1, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” at No. 2.
